Poor Power Supply : Angry soldiers Storm Power Station, Flog Manager Mercilessly

About 6 soldiers attached to the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala Barracks, Abeokuta, Ogun State, led by one Major Musa, stormed the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) substation – Olumo business hub, Rounder – on March 6 and beat up Salau Adekunle, the man on duty, over poor power supply.

Workers of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company say they have become fearful in their office when the soldiers descended on Adekunle, the substation’s distribution officer, with horse whips, because, presently on the average, the barracks and environs get 5 hours supply daily, which falls short of the soldiers’ expectation.

Narrating his experience to the Punch, Adekunle said:

“They told me to get up and without explanation, they started beating me. They complained that they did not get supply regularly, but it is not our fault. They said they would be the ones to determine the number of hours they want power. We told them it was not possible, but they didn’t want to listen.”

Corroborating the story, Adekunle’s colleague, said, “Electricity supply is divided into 3 levels – generation, transmission and distribution. This implies that generation affects transmission, which in turn affects distribution.

If there is less sufficient generated power, then there will be less power at our own side to distribute to the community, including the barracks. Before now, there was supply for at least 8 hours and at times, 15 hours. Electricity generation has reduced from 4517MW to 2800MW and now to over 1500MW.

All this is known and understood by the soldiers, but they pretend as if they do not know; that is why they now get 5 hours’ supply per day. Initially, the soldiers blamed us. Soon, it graduated to threats. They once arrested us and took us to their barracks and detained us for hours; l was a victim.”

Another official said they had been living in fear since the incident happened, adding that threats from the soldiers had intensified. “They said it would not be threats again, but killing.  Major Musa said he would send soldiers we don’t know. We spoke out because we cannot wait for them to kill us.

Man Rapes 14-Year Old Girl, Beats up Her Father

A man, identified as Chinego Wasiu, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl, Favour (pseudonym) in the Boundary, Ajegunle area of the state.

Punch Metro learnt that Wasiu, who was nabbed by the Ajegunle Police Division after the rape, also allegedly led a gang of thugs to Favour’s house to beat up the father.

Wasiu was said to have threatened to inflict injuries on the victim’s family if they made a noise about the rape.

A Punch correspondent gathered that around 9.30pm last Monday, Favour was sent on an errand to buy noodles and a candle from a shop. It was learnt that Wasiu had accosted the teenager and raped her, warning her not to disclose the incident to anyone.

It was gathered that the family, however, reported the matter at the police station on Tuesday, and the police launched a manhunt for the suspect.

But Wasiu on Tuesday allegedly led a gang of hoodlums to the victim’s father’s house on Alayabiagba Street, and injured him with broken bottles.

It was gathered that the suspect on Wednesday appeared again and was said to have threatened to kill the family members if they followed up the matter with the police.

Favour’s older brother, who gave his name only as Simeon, said Wasiu covered her sister’s mouth with clothes while he raped her, adding that the family members had reported at the Juvenile Welfare Department of the police station.

He said, “My sister had been sent to buy a candle and noodles in the neighbourhood. It was some minutes before 10pm. She was accosted by the rapist, and when she raised the alarm, he covered her mouth with clothes and raped her.

“The annoying part was that the man came to our house and threatened to deal with us if we made a noise over the incident. He came with thugs and beat up my father. He was injured; broken bottles were used on him.

“The suspect threatened to kill me too. I took pictures of the broken bottles and my father’s bloodstained clothes. We reported at the Ajegunle division and the case is presently at the Juvenile Welfare Department of the station.”

A social worker with the Child Protection Network, Toyin Okhlagogo, who assisted the girl to the Mirabel Centre for treatment, said, “The girl was raped in the Boundary area while running an errand for her family. The girl’s family threatened to take the suspect’s family up on the matter. The suspected rapist allegedly came with partners in crime to beat up the victim’s father. He was injured. The victim had been taken to the Mirabel Centre for medical examination.”

Wasiu has now been arrested, some of his gang members were still on the run. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, also confirmed Wasiu’s arrest.

She added that investigation was “still ongoing on the case of rape.”

Foreign Airlines to Sack 2000 Nigerian Workers Due to CBN Rules on Forex And Funds Transfer(Report)

The National Union of Air Transport Employees(NUATE), revealed that foreign airlines are planning to sack about two thousand Nigerian employees due to the CBN International rule on restrictions of Forex and funds transfer which prevents them from transferring their salaries to their respective home countries to take care of basic needs.

In a letter which was addressed to the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika and made available to newsmen, Acting General Secretary of NUATE, Comrade Olayinka Abioye said if this happens, a lot of Nigerians would be jobless and be thrown back into the labour market which is already full.
He added that if these employees are sacked, the airline industry will also suffer because there would be a shortage of workers. He asked for the Federal Government to intervene and help the foreign airlines out and save the workers jobs at the same time.

Abioye said:
“The reason being adduced for this danger is that their earnings in the past year is under lock with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN , as they are unable to transfer these earnings to their respective home countries to meet operational costs in accordance with international rules.”

“Following concerns raised recently by leaders of these workers and other stakeholders and in appreciation of the good intent of the government’s fiscal policy, we humbly make this clarion call for your (Minister) intervention to grant foreign airlines concession to repatriate their proceeds to their home countries,” he said.

“We hasten to place on the front burner an emerging threat confronting over 2, 000 private sector aviation workers in Nigeria which requires your intervention to forestall imminent loss of jobs of these number of workers”.
