Tragic : Tears, Blood & Sorrow, As Woman Kills Eight With SUV

Tragedy struck on Ilaje Road, Bariga, Lagos State, after a female motorist in a LandCruiser Sport Utility Vehicle crushed eight pedestrians to death. It was gathered that among the dead were a pregnant woman, two siblings, an old woman and a man returning from his place of work.

Several others were also said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries, including fractures and broken limbs in the Saturday incident which happened around 9pm.

Punch correspondents gathered that the driver of the yet-to-be-identified woman had left the vehicle for her near Majok Filling Station on Ilaje Road and had left for his house. The woman, said to be staying on Adebisi Street, had barely taken the wheels to drive the SUV home when the incident occurred.

The vehicle reportedly surged forward, crushing pedestrians and killing four of them on the spot.

A set of nine injured people were reportedly taken to the Gbagada General Hospital, among whom two died; while another set of seven casualties were later recovered.

It was learnt that two more corpses were found in the gutter on Sunday morning. Angry youths were said to have gone to the scene and dragged the woman out of the SUV and beaten her up.

She was about to be lynched when some policemen from the Bariga Police Division intervened.

Punch Metro learnt that the suspect was to celebrate her birthday on Sunday and was going home to make preparations for the event before the incident.

When Punch correspondents visited the area on Monday, about 20 okada riders (motorcyclists) besieged the police station to demand the corpses of two of the people who were killed in the accident.

A resident, identified as Iya Oyinbo, said the vehicle seemed to have had a brake failure.

She said, “The woman was driven to the Majok Filling Station by her driver after which the man left for his house and the woman moved to the driver’s seat to drive the vehicle home. What we saw was that the SUV suddenly surged forward and hit a pedestrian at the filling station.

“The vehicle also moved from there to hit some pedestrians by the roadside. It was three stationary faulty cars at the end of the Ilaje Road which eventually stopped the SUV.

“Four persons were crushed and they died instantly, including a woman, who was pregnant, and was taken inside a Keke Napep. On Sunday, two other hospitalised victims died.”

Another witness, Raheem Banji, said the corpses of two motorcyclists were found the following morning in the gutter where the SUV had flung them.

He said, “There were two okada riders who fell inside a gutter on that day. It was on Sunday that we found them. After the accident, youths gathered and began to beat up the woman for being careless. The mob wanted to destroy the car, but for the arrival of the policemen who saved her.”

A Keke Marwa driver, Laide Olakune, said he was lucky to have escaped, adding that his tricycle was badly damaged by the vehicle.

Olakunle said he was taking four passengers to the Ebute area, when the tricycle was hit and they all fell into the gutter.

“Although my tricycle was damaged, neither me nor any of my passengers sustained injuries. The police wanted to take away my tricycle as part of evidence, but I refused because I need to repair it and put it back on the road so I can make a living,” he said.

A police source said the female driver, who was rescued with injuries, was recuperating in a private hospital in the area.

He said, “The woman is wealthy, and she was to celebrate her birthday on Sunday. The mob stripped her to the underwear and beat her up. She is recuperating in a hospital; her husband has showed up at the police station.

“There was no pregnant woman in the incident. The victim had Fibroid, and looked as if she was pregnant. The police will invite the driver after her treatment.”

''How Robbers Stole My ATM And Cleaned Out My Account'' - Lady Narrates

A primary school teacher identified as Evi Iwaha(pictured above) has narrated how some robbers attacked her, took her ATM card and cleared her account in the early hours of Saturday January 30th.

She narrated her story to The Nation. "It happened a few minutes to 6.00am; I’d boarded a bus supposedly to Oshodi from Obanikoro. No sooner had the bus moved than they sprang into action. The first thing they did was grab my phone; ‘What do you do? Where are you coming from?’one of them asked. I was hopeful that they’d take pity on me, having told them I was just a primary school teacher.

Why bother to ask if it meant nothing to them? After rummaging through my wallet, they found two ATM cards and some cash. The question that followed hit me with a bang. ‘What’s your pin number?’ Instinctively, I hesitated for a while, but a resounding slap on my face soon got me spilling it out. These guys were actually going to do the unimaginable. They were going to clear my account. To think that I was about experiencing stories that had seemed far away. I looked up in time to see another member of the gang, sitting in the front seat. They called him officer. I don’t know if he was some military officer or if the name was just a code name. Even though I was still a little dazed from the slap, I couldn’t but notice the gun that hung loosely in the man’s hand, as he spoke to his colleague. He quickly handed the ATM cards to another member who played the role of a bus conductor. The driver slowed down at my inquisitor’s command, and the bus conductor jumped off the bus on his way to emptying my accounts. I silently wished I had payed the money into my friend’s account, he had asked me to do so to avoid spending it, since I’m saving towards paying my rent. Meanwhile, while we awaited the arrival of the messenger, the bus kept going round and round. In the process, the two women I met on the bus were told to disembark, and two others, a guy and his girlfriend were picked up at the next stop. They were lucky, as they didn’t have any ATM card on them. They were ripped of their phones and the only one thousand Naira note the guy had on him. They had also searched the lady who came on at the same time as I did. Obviously they didn’t get much from her. I was their sacrificial lamb. Soon my phone beeped – an indication that the money had been withdrawn. Then they drove back to the spot where they had dropped off the bus conductor, picked him up and drove off. By all means, it was a smooth operation, and we were home-bound now. I silently prayed that they dropped me off at a safe place. All along, I didn’t know where we were because I had been sitting on the floor of the bus. Suddenly, the bus pulled to a stop and we were all told to alight. I discovered that they had dropped us at the toll-gate. My inquisitor who had promised to give me transport money to take me home had either forgotten or couldn’t care less. They zoomed off as soon as we were all out of the bus. I stood there thinking of how to get to my place in Gbagada, until one good Nigerian who happened to be passing by came to my rescue by giving me N100, my exact fare home.”she said
