Police Officer Allegedly Assaults Lawyer in Lagos(Photo)

Sunday Elimihe, 41,(pictured above), a Lagos based lawyer has accused the police officers attached to the Onipanu Division in Lagos state of beating him up and leaving him with a wounded eye. The Nation reports that Elimihe was rushed to the Shomolu General Hospital Thursday, after he was assaulted by some policemen because he refused to give them N1,000 bribe. Narrating what happened, the victim who is currently hospitalized, said

"On my way coming from Lekki where I went to check a property with my client, I decided to use the Onipanu police station road, by Apata. Immediately I drove into the street close to the station, one Corporal Alonge stopped me, demanded for my vehicle particulars. I gave them to him, then he demanded for my driver’s license, which  I also gave him.  When he discovered I did not commit any offence, he asked for my tinted glass permit which I gave him. He told me I was using a forged tinted glass permit. I told him I could not have forged a police document as a lawyer.

He became furious and said he was going to arrest me. He jumped into my vehicle and insisted I must give him N1,000 to bail myself. I said I was not going to give him any money since I have not committed any offence.

He pounced on me and cocked his gun threatening to shoot me if I make a move. Another policewoman who sighted us came and dragged the gun from him. The policeman after being disarmed descended on me and gave me the beating of my life. He pushed me into the cell and another policeman came inside the cell, locked up the cell and beat me for 30 minutes. I see this as intimidation of the highest order, not because I am a lawyer, but because I am an average Nigerian. I was humiliated like a common criminal. This is oppression. One of my eyes is partially blind. I have been vomiting blood since yesterday. It was the intervention of a good policeman in the station who warned them not to kill me. I would have been dead by now,” he said.

David Mark Reacts to The Panama Report : Denies Owning Offshore Companies in The British Virgin Island

Former Senate President David Mark, has released a statement, denying claims in the Panama report that he owned about eight offshore companies in British Virgin Island.
Premiumtimes on Tuesday April 5th, reported that an investigation carried out by them and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), showed that the former senate president was the owner of eight offshore companies in the Island. In his response, Mark in denying the claim, said some political elements were out to tarnish his image. Read his statement after the cut

"Our attention has been drawn to spurious Media reports on the Panama papers in which former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark was alleged to have operated offshore companies. For the avoidance of doubt, in the released materials of the Panama Leaks, his name is not listed anywhere in the database of Mossack Fonseca Law Firm.

We reiterate categorically, that he is not directly or indirectly connected to any of the companies registered, operated or managed by the Mossack Fonseca Law Firm. We challenge all those behind this propaganda and Media outburst to prove or show that Senator Mark’s name was mentioned in the leaks. He is prepared to stand and defend himself against any accusation in relation to this matter. Senator Mark’s Media team has carried out its own search of the Mossack Fonseca database and found no statement, item or any connection to Senator David Mark or his Family. It follows that there is no record whatsoever of any impropriety or wrongdoing.

We recall that in his quest for Senate Presidency in 2007, there was an attempt to bring a similar issue to the fore in order to stop him. So what are their fears now in 2016 for regurgitating the same issue?Once more, Senator Mark has distanced himself and any member of his family from the said Mossack Fonseca Firm and has no affiliation whatsoever with any company operated, registered or managed by Mossack Fonseca. Senator Mark has not contravened any laws of the land and he is treating this for what it is, an attempt to blackmail and tarnish his hard earned image by some political elements. As a public officer, Senator Mark has maintained a high level of decorum, respects and observes the laws of the land and believes in the sanctity of the rule of law. He will not be distracted by what is clearly a deliberate mischief and propaganda."
Records of all his assets are available with the relevant government agencies and can be verified. He has consulted his legal team and will take this up accordingly.

How My Fight Against Subsidy Fraud Led to The Kidnap of my Mother - Former Minister For Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

In a recent interview with French newspaper, Le Monde, the former Minister for Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said her fight against the fraud being carried out through the subsidy regime while she was minister, led to the kidnap of her 83 years old mother.

Okonjo-Iweala said she had asked former president Goodluck Jonathan to remove the subsidy regime after the massive corruption in it was uncovered.

She said when her mother was kidnapped, all the kidnappers demanded was for her to resign.
“I told the president that we would stop paying(subsidy). What happened? They kidnapped my mother, 83 years. During the first three days, their only demand was my resignation. I was supposed to go on television and announce my resignation. This was one of the worst moments of my life. Can you imagine what happens in your head if you have to be responsible for the death of your mother? I will not go into details, but you must understand that in a country like this… in the fight against corruption, we must be prepared to pay a personal price. My father asked me not to resign. The president asked me not to resign. At the end, everyone began looking for her, and the kidnappers released her”‎she said
According to Okonjo-Iweala, state governors were opposed to saving the money realised during the oil boom in the past administration
"‎When I was finance minister the first time, the volatility of oil prices, and therefore state resources, cost at least three points of growth in the country. We then established a stabilization mechanism and opened an account for the oil surplus, which posted up to $22 billion. In 2008, when prices fell from 148 to $ 38 a barrel, no one heard of Nigeria because the country was able to tap into this fund. And that, I am very proud of. When I returned to the department in 2011, there remained only $4 billion on this account while the price of oil was very high! I tried again to put money aside. The president agreed, but the governors did not accept. I suffered a lot of attacks from them and now that the country would really need this account, these same people accuse me of not having saved! If Nigeria had been more careful, we would not be here today. It hurts me"she said.
