Federal Government Imposing More Hardships on Nigeria With VAT Increment - Governor Fayose Says

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has said that the Federal Government was planning to impose more hardships on Nigerians by increasing Value Added Tax (VAT) from the current five per cent to 10 per cent, describing the move as insensitive to the plight of Nigerians who are suffering from the bad economic policies of the President Mohammadu Buhari led All Progressives Congress (APC) government.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had said on Thursday, in Lagos that the current five per cent VAT rate in the country was very low, and went on to add that the Federal Government would increase the taxpayer base this year. Reacting through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said any increment in VAT or any other tax being paid by Nigerians at this time will further make life unbearable for the people.

“Nigerians are suffering and the little that they have, federal government is planning to take back through VAT increment, this is wickedness! “Under three months, electricity tariff was increased despite epileptic power supply, N50 stamp duty was imposed on bank customers for money received into their accounts via electronic transfer, cash and cheques; petrol is being sold for as high as N400 per litre and now they are talking about increasing VAT to 10 per cent, this is the height of insensitivity to the plight of Nigerians,” he said.

The governor, who lamented the increase in the cost of living of Nigerians, occasioned by the bad economic policies of the Federal Government, said “even recent figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed that prices of food have hit a record high and inflation is worsening.

“How can government be considering 100 per cent increment in VAT when businesses are folding up, prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed, millions of Nigerians are losing their jobs and those who are still employed are no longer getting paid regularly? “For even contemplating the increment of VAT at this difficult time shows that the Buhari-led government does not care about the welfare of the citizens and only God will save the poor masses from the hands of this government.”

Governor Fayose said rather than imposing more hardships on Nigerians, President Buhari should seek help from experts on how best to revive the country’s economy, adding that; “As at today, the Buhari-led government is yet to show that it has any clue to the revival of the economy.”

Nomoreloss' Brother Speaks About Late Singer's Life, Reveals How Secretive He Was & The Last Thing He Said

Nomoreloss’ younger brother, in an interview with Punch recently after the singer’s death spoke about his life, his music, what he said last and how the late singer kept so many secrets. The interview sheds more light on the life of the late singer. Read below…

How would you describe your brother, Nomoreloss?

He was a selfless person. He was down-to-earth and that was the reason why he was not loud even though he was in the limelight. In order to be successful in the entertainment industry today, one has to be a bit vain but my late brother was none of that.

When the last time you saw him?

I was the last person to see him before he passed away.

Can you recollect your last conversation with him?

He spoke about his daughter and music. He loved both dearly. He always wanted his daughter to be happy and he cared about his music.

What do you remember about his last moments?

As a selfless person, he never wanted anyone to experience the pain he went through. He always called everybody to tell them he was fine, regardless of his condition. On his last night at the hospital, he made it clear to everyone that he was fine. In fact, he asked me to get him cranberry juice on my way to the hospital the following morning. When we got there in the morning, we were told he had passed on.

What was growing up with him like?

It was pretty difficult. We did everything together. He never took ‘no’ for an answer. He was not vain or flashy and could not pretend about anything. He was not interested in the flamboyance in the entertainment industry, he just wanted to sing.

Did you support him when he made known his intention to become a singer?

He came out to say he wanted to become a singer in the 90s. At that time, the entertainment industry had not experienced the growth it has witnessed today. Then in 1998, we used to gather at OJB Studios, with Tuface Idibia and other artistes. It was difficult when he ventured into the entertainment industry. I remember he wore my garment for his very first video. That was the kind of support I gave him. It went on until I broke away and delved into the corporate world.

Which of his legacies are you most proud of?

There are over 170 million people in Nigeria and I am proud that a lot of people know a guy like him lived and passed away.

Are there plans to immortalise him?

Definitely, we will make plans for that.

How much support have you received from his colleagues?

The support from them has been enormous. The artistes that turned out did not come because they were paid; everybody contributed based on the extent to which Nomoreloss impacted their lives. To me, he was my brother but he was also a brother to a lot of other people. The emotional support from them is also commendable.

How are your parents taking the loss?

My mum has passed away but my dad is alive. He is not taking it very easy, but what can we do. God knows the best.

Are you his only sibling?

No, I am not. He was my elder brother before he passed away, but I am the eldest now.

How does it feel assuming the responsibility of the eldest sibling in the family after your brother passed away?

The responsibility is not mine to assume but for God. I cannot say anything but we will be hopeful and be faithful and believe that God will take care of us.

In what ways did he impact your life?

He was everything to me. When we were growing up, he helped me with English Language and some proposals. Looking into his journals, one will find a lot of proposals and projects that are left undone.

Is there anything you could have done for him or said to him if he were alive?

The only regret and pain I have is that he kept so many secrets to himself.

How do you mean by secrets?

That is a mysterious thing I cannot explain right now. He was not very open. He kept telling everyone he was fine even at his last moments. His passing is still a big shock.

Were the both of you not close?

He lived with my family until he passed away but we were unaware of anything. I thank God for his life and I believe God has a purpose for him.

Man Goes 'Crazy' in Anambra, Throws His Mother Into a Well, Then Throws Bricks Into it to Ensure Her Death(Photo)

One Ejike Nwankwo Ohagba from Ezigbo village, Igbo-Ukwu community, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday, April 7th, went crazy and threw his mother into an abandoned well in his father’s compound. He then threw blocks into the well to kill her.

According to Anambra State news, the 30-year-old suspect had earlier in September 2015 allegedly killed two of his siblings in the same well, set his family house ablaze and disappeared only to reappear last week to kill his mother.

"The suspect’s mother, late Mrs Christiana Nwankwo Ohagba, a widow, took off from where she was taking refuge since her family house was burnt to do some farming with a 14-year old boy, Chiemerie at the family compound. Meanwhile, the source said, the suspect was hiding somewhere within the compound, with his mother completely unaware of the danger lurking around the premises."

Chiemerie spotted the suspect and alerted the deceased. Chiemerie escaped but unfortunately, the deceased could not as the suspect attacked her, Sunday Sun reports.

"After wrestling with him to free herself in vain, she was thrown into the well by the suspect who went ahead to gather blocks and started throwing them into the well to ensure that she did not survive. They said it was Chiemerie who reported the attack on them to other members of the community after running for a distance from the scene of the incident. But before help could come, the widow was already dead in the well and the suspect had varnished again. Police and the local vigilante were invited to help and bring out her body from the well."

The traditional ruler of Igbo-Ukwu community, Igwe Martin Eze, Idu of Igbo-Ukwu, who confirmed the tragic incident said he was shocked, adding that the case has been reported to the police.

While urging the federal and state governments to set up rehabilitation centres in many communities where people could be rehabilitated when they begin to exhibit unusual behaviour, he also said that jobs should be created to get the youths employed to reduce the level of hardship which he noted was responsible for increase in crime in the society.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Ali Okechukwu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police said he was yet to confirm the incident.
