"I Was Sexually Abused & Impregnated in Primary 6" - Popular Nollywood Actress Reveals

Veteran Nollywood actress, Mrs Rita Edochie said she was a victim of sexual abuse many years ago and called on parents to regularly communicate with their young children.

Rita Edochie, who is an inlaw to Nollywood icon Peter Edochie, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja. Edochie, who was a guest at a seminar to end violence against children, told NAN that she was sexually violated at a young age by a family friend and got pregnant when she was in primary 6

She said, “I was a victim of sexual abuse, that was when I was in primary six, I was going to the hospital and somebody called me.

“The boy used some diabolic means and sexually violated me, when I could not see my period, I refused to tell my mother, because she was very strict. I love sharing my experience because at the end of the day I succeeded, If I had not succeed, I would not have been able to be saying it.”

She explained that the pregnancy was about seven months before her mother noticed it.

Edochie added that her mother was shocked at the pregnancy because she thought her being strict would not allow such a thing to happen.

“My mother asked how it happened and I told her everything; my brother picked a knife and wanted to kill me, but my mother stopped him.

“It happened that the mother of the boy that violated me was my mother’s friend; the boy’s mother was surprised but the boy denied.

“My mother took me to hospital to abort the pregnancy with a plan of taking me to my grandmother’s place at ‘Ogede’ to stay for one week before returning home.

“I told her I may lose my life in the process and because she loved me, she then aborted (stopped) the planned abortion; I feel it was God that spoke through me.

According to the actress, her mother took care of the baby while she went to school, otherwise she wouldn’t have been where she was today, she explained.

Premium Times notes that the veteran actress called on parents to communicate regularly with their children and make them their best friends.

“Parents should always listen to their children’s complaints on happenings both in and outside the home.’

Nigerians Want Change in Their Pocket - Rotimi Amaechi

The Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, says Nigerians have become impatient about this present administration's change agenda as they desire to see change in their pockets and not just in structures.
Speaking at a forum organised by the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Abuja yesterday May 24th, ‎Amaechi said the present government met a bad structure in governance and is trying to correct it. He says they will need at least $55.9 billion to develop infrastructure in the transportation sector...

“We didn’t anticipate that things were this bad. We thought you go to government and there would be money for you to run government and others. Now you have the situation where there is no money to run government. I hate to use the word difficult; I hate to use the word impossible but we met things close to difficult and impossibility. That is why Nigerians are impatient; they want to see results and for them, change is not about change in structure, it is about change in their pocket. Because their pocket is getting dried and they wanted us to put some more resources in their pocket. What I usually say to people is that we beg you to give us time; we will achieve our objective if you give us time and we will both thank God for that opportunity. We need over 50.9 billion dollars in the next five years to develop infrastructure and 50 billion dollars is not a joke. One of the infrastructure we are trying to develop is the railway infrastructure; the president has kindly agreed that he will fund it because the contract was awarded by Obasanjo, the former president; he awarded the contract for Lagos to Kano. President Jonathan awarded the contract for Lagos to Calabar, what the president has agreed to do is to fund it; he said can we fund the ones we have already awarded; no more awards until we have developed the ones we have awarded. So we are focusing on the Lagos to Kano railway and the Lagos to Calabar rail line. If you look at the communities surrounding this rail line; Lagos to Kano will start from Lagos to Ibadan; it will impact on so many sectors of the economy including housing; people who ordinarily will not be able to pay for house rent in Lagos can live in Ibadan, can live in Ogun and come to work in Lagos.”he said

Woman & Nurse Arrested While Aborting 12-year-old’s Pregnancy

A 12-year-old girl, identified simply as Favour, has been rescued by the police in the Mafoluku, Oshodi area of Lagos State, after her aunt and the husband allegedly took her there to get rid of a pregnancy.

According to PUNCH Metro,  Favour who was discovered to be four months pregnant, had been allegedly raped several times by her aunt’s husband, identified as Johnbull Dike, in January 2016 before she conceived.

Johnbull, a father of three, and Happiness, however, found out that Favour was pregnant in February, after which they bundled her to stay with their trader friend in Mafoluku, to hide the evil deed.

However, the woman was said to have returned Favour to the couple in April, saying she could not
afford to take care of her.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Johnbull and Happiness, who lived on Brown Street, subsequently took Favour to the nurse to get rid of the pregnancy. The girl was allegedly taken to the nurse on Sunmola Street, Mafoluku, on Wednesday, May 4.

however, some residents gave a tip-off to a child rights’ group, Child Protection Network, which involved the police.

It was learnt that while Favour was put in police’s care, a manhunt was launched for Johnbull, a tricycle rider, who fled the area after the police rescued the girl.

Dike’s wife and the nurse who was caught during the abortion has been arrested by the Akinpelu Police Division.

The matter was also reported to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team in Alausa.

When Punch visited the area, a worker with the Child Protection Network, Ebenezer Omejalile, said Favour did not inform her aunt about the rape, because the suspect had allegedly threatened to kill her if she did.

He said:
“The case was brought to my attention by a community development committee secretary in Oshodi, Mr. Mamora. The victim was raped and impregnated by her aunt’s husband.
“I went to see the girl at the place where the aunt had taken her with the connivance of a nurse to abort the pregnancy. The girl underwent a scan before the abortion. It was a failed process because she began to bleed at the nurse’s place. The police were informed on that Wednesday and the two women were arrested, while Johnbull fled.
“The policemen took Favour to a proper hospital to get rid of the remaining foetus. As it is, the suspect is on the run because he knew that the girl is with the police.”
At the police station, Happiness said that her husband had fled from the house since the day of her arrest.

She said:
“He has not called me since that day. His phone numbers are also switched off.”
A police source told PUNCH Metro that Happiness had been granted bail because her last child had an infection and needed her attention.

She said:
“Our investigation shows that the nurse is a quack. She is not trained and she proceeded to do abortion for a 12-year-old girl. The suspect’s wife has a two-year-old son who is being treated for an infection. So, she has been granted bail.
“She did not deny that they wanted to abort the pregnancy. The story they painted to the nurse was that the girl was raped by an unidentified hoodlum.”
Punch also sighted Favour at the station before she was taken to the state command headquarters in Ikeja.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that the police were on the trail of Dike.

She said:
“There is a case of defilement against Johnbull. His wife and the nurse have been arrested for aborting a pregnancy. The Commissioner of Police has ordered that the case be transferred to the Gender Unit of the command.
“The suspect is on the run, but efforts are on to arrest him. Meanwhile, the wife and the nurse will both be charged to court.”

It's Time to Peg Marriage Age In Nigeria - Emir of Kano

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II says its time to peg marriage age in the country. He said this while speaking at a conference of Northern Muslims Religious Leaders Forum on Primary Health care in Kano yesterday May 24th, Sanusi spoke strongly against child marriage. According to him, the health challenge faced when a girl is exposed to child marriage is enough reason to discontinue the practice.

"I believe the time is ripe to take a stand on this age long practice of early marriage, and coincidentally we subscribed to Malikiyya school of thought like Morocco, Malaysia and Egypt who had since pegged marriage age to 17, 19 and 18 respectively”. Sanusi added that the role of a woman as a housewife are numerous and highly demanding and hence a girl should be allowed to have attained some level of maturity before she is married off. On domestic violence in marriages, Sanusi said it was not Islamic for men to hit their wives. He added that he had already told his daughters to retaliate if they experience such “I don’t expect my in-law to lay his hand on my daughter, but I have since urged her to retaliate any form of assault from her husband”.
